Fatal Claw Beginner Tips
Heal, pin, socket Cabitz, then backtrack — the marsh waits.
These tips are for the first several hours of Fatal Claw after you know how Kisha moves. They are not a replacement for Getting Started, which is the first-hour path through the Origin Laboratory. Read that walkthrough first, then use this page as a checklist so you do not starve heals, skip the map, or wander into 1.0 late content too early.
Fatal Claw is a friendly Metroidvania by design: Carox is available from the start, Cabitz let you customize Kisha without a hidden crafting tree, and difficulty sliders can take pressure off combat. The game still punishes sloppy resource habits. The five habits below prevent most early restarts.
Healing is the first skill, not the last
NDEV GAMES treats healing as a core loop, not a panic button. Early Kisha is weak; the opening stretch exists to teach you when to spend a heal and when to walk away. Do not empty your heal resource on a single trash pack just because you can. Clear a room, heal if you are actually low, then move. Bosses and named elites are where heals belong.
If a fight is draining you before you learn the pattern, lower combat difficulty or use the per-category accessibility sliders instead of burning every heal and calling the build bad. How to Play explains the combat loop (claw, heal, Engraved Skills, Blink) in more detail.
After a boss, look for the owl statue. Official patch notes placed owl statues after boss encounters so you can recover HP when the fight is over. That is not a reason to skip heals during the fight; it is a reason not to panic-heal the last hit if you are about to win.
Do not skip map pins, drones, or Carox
Carox (Cat + Radar + Codex) is the in-game map, and it is unlocked at the start on purpose. You do not buy a map from a shop to begin filling rooms. Open it often. When a ledge, locked door, or wind current is obvious but you lack the tool, drop a pin instead of promising you will remember.
Players also get in-game drones and markers that behave like screenshot pins. Use them the same way you would F12 a wall: mark the room, write a short mental note (need Claws, need Blink height, need a lever), and leave. Steam overlay screenshots still help for puzzles with visual tells, but pins travel with the save.
Skipping pins is how people get lost in Elord Castle, Strigine Quarry, and later vertical regions. The map is dense; your memory is not a second save file. If Carox looks empty during a cutscene, that was a known glitch patched in v0.9.269 — reload or reopen the map rather than assuming the area has no layout.
Take Cabitz early, even if you do not understand the stone yet
Cabitz are the mysterious magic stones that add or customize abilities. Steam’s store copy is the official description, and overlay even tracks an equip-Cabitz trophy among the 51. That is a hint: socket something as soon as the game lets you. See Achievements for the ten highlighted names only.
You do not need a perfect Cabitz Builds page on hour one. You need a stone in a slot. Expansion Cabitz such as Sage’s Moonstone, Spirit Bead Rosary, Traditional Royal Whetstone, Prepared Strike, Dotiman’s Token, Heart of the Black Curse, and Half Salvation Stone (renamed from Sacred Flame of Life) are named in patch notes. Treat those names as real. Do not invent extra stones. If a stone’s tooltip is unclear, keep it until you read Engraved Skills or the Codex, then swap.
Kannium upgrades the Claw (the official Claw Sharpening achievement is “Use Kannium to upgrade your Claw”). Do not hoard every material forever, but do not dump early Kannium into vanity if you still bounce off basic infected packs. Combat first, costumes later.
Backtrack when you earn Lyani’s Claws
Lyani’s Claws is an official Mutant Ability added in the 1st Expansion Update (v0.9.228). It is a traversal tool, not flavor text. When you unlock it, reopen Carox and visit every pin that said “can’t reach.” That is the Metroidvania loop Fatal Claw wants: Origin Laboratory and Moss Cave hide routes that only make sense after later tools.
Do not assume Lyani’s Claws is the last movement upgrade. Blink, wall contact while gliding (added from community feedback in v0.9.265), and later 1.0 tools such as the Silver Chain mentioned in the Aphotic Marsh teaser all change which rooms are legal. After each new ability, spend fifteen minutes on pins before you push the story critical path. Mutated Abilities is the catalog; this tip is only the habit.
If a Stone Warp dumps you somewhere that feels like a soft lock, remember the Upper Elord Castle lever bug from v0.9.269: warping without activating a required lever could block progress. That issue was patched, but the lesson remains — activate obvious levers before you warp, and keep a nearby rest point.
The 1.0 marsh is late. Do not treat it as a starter biome
Aphotic Marsh is the 1.0 late region: black sludge, no sunlight, a corrupted wetland, and a teaser that explicitly frames it as a place people do not return from. Steam even has a reach trophy for it (not listed in the ten highlighted names). If you see marsh tiles, black current, or 1.0-only messaging, you are not in the tutorial. Turn around unless you already have the movement kit the Full Walkthrough expects.
Early Access players who wandered toward late teasers often burned heals and patience on enemies tuned for expanded kits. 1.0 adds Lower Moss Cave depth, Upper Origin Laboratory, Higasha Tundra interior, and the marsh as a conclusion, not a first-day field trip. Follow Origin Laboratory into the connected early ruins, then Elord Castle and the expansion regions in the order the map actually opens.
Small habits that save runs
Save at stones, benches, and warps the way you would in any Metroidvania. Checkpoints exist. Community reports still complain about sparse checkpoints in some autoscroller and challenge rooms — that is a density complaint, not proof of a save-anywhere button. If a challenge room looks long, assume you will replay it from the last stone, not from a mid-air checkpoint you invented.
Use Controls before you blame the game for a missed Look Up ledge. Increase Look Up / Look Down range is an official quality-of-life change; many “hidden” items are just above the default camera.
Optional costumes from the 1st Expansion — Blue Scale Robe and Crimson Flare Dance — are cosmetics. They are not required for story progress. Chase them after you can survive a room, not instead of Cabitz.
When you want the beat-by-beat route again, return to Getting Started and then the Full Walkthrough. When you want named fights, use the Bosses Hub. When you want hardware, use System Requirements. Keep this page for the five habits: heal, pin, Cabitz, Claws backtrack, marsh later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I explore the Aphotic Marsh as soon as I see a path?
No. The marsh is 1.0 late-game content. Follow Getting Started and the Full Walkthrough until you have the movement tools those pages expect, then enter the marsh on purpose.
Is Carox something I have to unlock?
No. The developers give you the map from the start so you are not hunting a map item in the first hour. Open it, pin dead ends, and use drones or markers like screenshot pins.
Do I need Lyani's Claws before I backtrack?
You can backtrack anytime, but Lyani's Claws is the named Mutant Ability that reopens a lot of expansion-era geometry. After you obtain it, spend a session clearing Carox pins before pushing new story rooms.
What should I spend materials on first?
Keep heals usable, socket Cabitz early, and use Kannium to upgrade the Claw when combat feels spongy. Costumes such as Blue Scale Robe and Crimson Flare Dance can wait.
Can I save anywhere if a challenge room has no bench?
Treat stones, benches, and Stone Warps as your save network. Checkpoints exist, but some autoscroller and challenge rooms are a known community complaint for sparse rest points. Do not plan around a save-anywhere command.
Where is the first-hour walkthrough?
Use Getting Started under the Walkthrough Hub, not a second starter page in Guides. This Beginner Tips page is the habit list that sits on top of that route.
